Robert Jenrick Suggests Nigel Farage Is On Drugs For Wanting To Scrap Two-Child Benefit Cap
Shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick.Robert Jenrick has suggested Nigel Farage may have been on drugs when he decided to support scrapping the two-child benefit cap.The shadow justice secretary speculated that the Reform UK leader had smoked cannabis – or been drunk – when he came up with the policy.Farage announced on Tuesday that he would end the cap and also bring back the winter fuel payment for every pensioner if he becomes prime minister. He said: “Lifting the two-child cap is the right thing to do. Not because we support a benefits culture, but because we believe for lower-paid workers this actually makes having children just a little bit easier for them.“It’s not a silver bullet, it doesn’t solve all of those problems. But it helps them.”Keir Starmer also wants to scrap the cap, which was introduced by the last Tory government in 2017, and an announcement could be made in the Budget in the autumn. However, the Conservatives are opposed to scrapping it.Reacting to Farage’s announcement in a lengthy post on X, Jenrick said: “Why is Farage backing this policy?“Has he cooked this up after one too many pints at his local? Has a joint found its way into his usual pack of Marlboro Golds?”Reform UK have been contacted for comment.Jenrick’s remark came as the Conservatives continue to trail well behind Reform in the opinion polls.According to YouGov, support for Farage’s party now stands at 29%, giving them a 10-point lead over the Tories.Tory leader Kemi Badenoch is under mounting pressure to turn the party’s fortunes around, with Dominic Cummings today saying she is already “a goner”.He told Sky News the Tories may already be “dead” and that Farage could be on course to become prime minister.“It could definitely happen now, yeah, because the old system’s just so completely broken,” Cummings said.“If he does what I’m suggesting, and actually sets out a path for how Reform is going to change, how Reform is going to bring in people, how it’s structurally going to alter, what it’s going to build, how it is going to do policy, how it can recruit MPs, etc.“If he does that, then there’ll be a huge surge of interest and support into the whole thing.”Related...'Trussonomics On Steroids': Farage Compared To Failed Tory PM Over 'Unfunded' Reform Spending SpreeNigel Farage Is Voters' Last Choice To Be Prime Minister, Poll ShowsLabour Attack 'Privately-Educated Stockbroker' Nigel Farage As War Of Words Erupts
