Saying These 2 Words Can Keep Kids Safe Around Pools On Holiday

A parent has opened up about the pool safety rule her family swears by to keep kids safe – and it’s surprisingly simple. Freya, who shares tips and insights into motherhood at @thequeermama, shared the parenting rule that’s been a “genuine game changer” on holiday, but also in daily life where “it takes two seconds for something to go wrong”.So, what’s the rule?In a video posted on TikTok, the parent shared the “your aeroplane” rule – which can be particularly useful on holiday. “The idea is that pilots, when they need to step away from flying the plane, they turn to the co-pilot and say ‘your aeroplane’ to be like ‘you’re in control now. I am not, I’m stepping away’,” she explained. The co-pilot then has to say “my aeroplane” to acknowledge they’ve heard it and understand they’re in control of the situation, she added. And parents can do this when they’re in charge of watching their kids – either around a swimming or paddling pool, or any other situations where they need constant supervision for safety reasons. It’s especially important as drowning is most common between the ages of one and four years old – and most drownings in children happen in swimming pools. It’s important to hand over control In response to the video, parents shared the similar methods they follow for handing over control.“Yes! Great idea. We always say ‘tapping in’ or ‘tapping out’ lol,” said one.Another added: “Absolutely yes to this! We say ‘your eyes on’ followed by ‘my eyes on’ but exact same principle.. works a dream!”“This is such a useful piece of advice,” added another TikTok user. “Especially emphasising the need to acknowledge. Easier and probably clearer than nagging. Don’t forget though, control has to be actively handed back.”In response to the tip, one parent suggested it’s “no good” for single parents, to which Freya responded that it can be used with friends or relatives, too – basically anyone you trust to watch over the kids.Another commenter reaffirmed the importance of acknowledging who is watching little ones, saying their friend’s son almost drowned and “this was due to dad believing he was with mum and mum believing he was with dad”.Any other safety tips?Yes! Others took the opportunity to share their own pool safety tips, too.A leisure centre staff member urged parents to always make sure children wear bright colours to swim in, and not “greens, blues, white and black”.They added: “It helps lifeguards spot them easier in the pool in an emergency.”Experts have previously warned against wrapping towels around kids’ shoulders after they get out of the pool, too.Related...The Rudest Things You Can Do At The PoolThe 3 Most Common Illnesses You Can Catch At A Swimming PoolThe 3 Mistakes Most Parents Make When It Comes To Pool Safety
