The Beatles Films: Everyone Who Has Been Cast In Sam Mendes’ Biopics So Far
Paul Mescal, Joseph Quinn, Barry Keoghan and Harris Dickinson will play The Beatles in Sam Mendes' new filmsWhen news first broke of not one but four new films about The Beatles, attention almost immediately went to who would be playing the Fab Four in the films.Director Sam Mendes – the Oscar-winning director behind films like American Beauty, Skyfall and 1917 –  is set to tell the story of each member of the seminal group in the ambitious project, which will see all four movies being released simultaneously in April 2028. And with the new movies marking the first time living members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, and The Beatles’ record company, have given permission for their stories to be told on the big screen, the pressure is on to nail it. Unsurprisingly, people have already had opinions about the first casting announcement of perhaps the most famous and influential band in the world, with some people unimpressed that half of the quartet would be played by well-known (and apparently un-Liverpuddlian) actors. If you’re lost about who is playing who in Sam Mendes’ ambitious new project, fret not. We’ve compiled exactly who’s lined up to appear in the films and put it all in one place…Paul MescalContinuing his run as one of the biggest actors of the moment, Irish actor Paul Mescal is signed up to play Paul McCartney. It comes off the back of huge roles in the likes of Gladiator II as well as Oscar buzz for the upcoming Hamnet in which he plays William Shakespeare.Paul broke out in the TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s novel Normal People, before going on to pick up critical acclaim through his heartbreaking performances in Aftersun and All Of Us Strangers. The Oscar nominee has already fed us bits and pieces about how he’s getting into character as his Beatles namesake, including learning to play the guitar lefthanded and singing the iconic Beatles song Blackbird alongside Macca himself. Harris DickinsonAlso claiming a leading spot in the Beatles line-up is Harris Dickinson, who’ll play John Lennon. Following his major breakout role in 2022 satirical black comedy film Triangle Of Sadness, the London-born actor more recently starred opposite Nicole Kidman in erotic thriller Babygirl, as well as busying himself with his acclaimed directorial debut Urchin, which arrived on the big screen earlier this year. Harris has spoken about his “fear” of taking on the role of John because of both the magnitude and the exposure that comes with portraying such an iconic figure in such a significant film. The Bafta nominee also confirmed that he’s working with a dialogue coach to nail John’s accent in a recent interview with Channel 4 News, noting: “The modern Scouse [accent] is so different.”Barry KeoghanSaltburn star Barry Keoghan is set to play Beatles drummer Ringo Starr.Known for his style of character acting, Barry’s career has gone from strength to strength in recent years, with the Irish actor starring in a string of commercially and critically acclaimed movies like The Killing of A Sacred Deer, Dunkirk, Saltburn and the Oscar-nominated The Banshees of Inisherin. Barry is already getting into character as Ringo, meeting the Beatles star himself and finding himself in the mortifying situation of being asked to play the drums for him.“I met him at his house, and he played the drums for me,” he told Jimmy Kimmel. “He asked me to play, but I wasn’t playing the drums for Ringo [...] When I was talking to him, I couldn’t look at him. I was nervous, but he’s like, ‘You can look at me’.He went on to explain how he planned to bring Ringo to life on the big screen, saying: “My job is to observe and kinda take in mannerisms and study him. I want to humanise him and bring feelings to it and not just sort of imitate.”Joseph QuinnPaul’s (that’s Mescal not McCartney!) Gladiator II co-star Joseph Quinn completes the Fab Four line-up, taking on the role of lead guitarist George Harrison. Best known for his appearance in Netflix’s Stranger Things – where he played fan favourite eccentric rocker Eddie – Joseph also starred opposite Lupita Nyong’o in the horror film A Quiet Place: Day One, and is also known for his role as The Human Torch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.Joseph spoke to Esquire about the idea of appearing in the Beatles biopic before he was officially announced, explaining: “My mum’s from Liverpool. She’s a very Scouse lady. I grew up spending Christmases and stuff there – I love my Liverpudlians.“My mum was singing Beatles songs when I was at primary school, so if that was to happen, there would be another level of meaningfulness there.”James NortonJames Norton seems to have self-confirmed that he’ll be playing Beatles manager Brian Epstein in the upcoming biopics. The Happy Valley star shared a screenshot of an article that said he was being eyed for the role on Instagram, simply captioning it “Brian” along with a heart emoji.Brian is heavily credited for his role in the Beatles’ rise to fame, and managed the group from 1961 until his death – at the age of 32 – in 1967.Given Brian’s significance in all four members’ lives, it would be reasonable to assume James could appear in all four films in his role as the music mogul. 2025 has been a huge year for James, with the actor starring in ITV mini-series Playing Nice as well as epic historical BBC drama King & Conqueror and Netflix’s House of Guinness, where he played lead role Sean Rafferty. This year aside, the star has also appeared in War & Peace, Black Mirror and Grantchester amongst others.Saoirse RonanWhile there hasn’t been official confirmation just yet, multiple sources have told Deadline that Saoirse Ronan will be playing Linda McCartney – Paul’s first wife – in the new films. This would mark the second time Saoirse and Paul Mescal have worked together, after they both appeared in sci-fi thriller Foe. Saoirse has a healthy collection of Oscar nominations for her roles in Atonement, Brooklyn, Lady Bird and Little Women, and most recently she appeared in Steve McQueen’s Second World War drama Blitz. The Irish actor hasn’t said anything publicly about appearing in the films, but previously described how nerve-wracking she found having to sing in Blitz while underlining her love of music.“I’ve always loved music, and I’ve grown up listening to the best singers in the world,” she explained. “I can hold a tune, but I’m not a singer [...] I would love to do more of it where I get more time to properly prep.”As well as being a photographer and animal rights activist, Linda was also a keyboardist and vocalist alongside her husband in the band Wings.Mia McKenna-BruceRising British actor Mia McKenna-Bruce has signed up to play Ringo’s first wife Maureen “Mo” Starkey, according to Deadline. Maureen was a hairdresser in Liverpool, and met Ringo when the Beatles were performing in the city, marrying the drummer in 1965 with the pair later divorcing 10 years later.Mia had her big screen breakthrough in critically acclaimed coming-of-age drama How To Have Sex in 2023, and has also appeared in Netflix’s Persuasion alongside Dakota Johnson and the TV shows Get Even, The Witcher and Cleaning Up. Aimee Lou WoodThe White Lotus and Sex Education star Aimee Lou Wood is another name that’s being thrown around, with the actor “circling the role” of the model Pattie Boyd according to the likes of Variety and The Sun. While at this point, nothing has been confirmed, Aimee is rumoured to be playing Pattie, who was married to guitarist George for 11 years, in the new films.Anna SawaiOne very significant role that is yet to be announced is that of Yoko Ono. The artist, singer and activist was hugely influential to Beatles singer and rhythm guitarist John, with the pair marrying in 1969 and remaining together until his murder in 1980.Shōgun actor Anna Sawai has been rumoured to be in the mix to play Yoko, but there’s yet to be any official statement.Anna herself appeared to cast doubt on the speculation with a non-committal: “I think a rumour is just a rumour”.MORE FILM NEWS:This Is The 'Celebrated Actor' Who'll Be Playing The Cowardly Lion In Wicked For GoodLet's Just Take A Moment To Appreciate Alexander Skarsgård's Pillion Premiere Red Carpet LookElliot Page Is Overjoyed At Reuniting With Christopher Nolan For The First Time Since His Transition In The Odyssey
