The Salt Path Film Producers Address Controversy Surrounding The Original Book

Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs in the recent film adaptation of The Salt PathThe producers behind the recent film The Salt Path have responded to the fresh controversy surrounding the book which inspired it.Over the weekend, The Observer published the results of an investigation which cast doubt on the veracity of some of the claims outlined in Raynor Winn’s 2018 book, which was marketed as a memoir. The book was more recently turned into a film starring Gillian Anderson and The White Lotus’ Jason Isaacs as its central couple, who walk the 600-mile length of the South West Coast Path, in South West England, after being made homeless. However, The Observer’s investigation alleged that the events that led to the real-life couple being made homeless played out differently in real life to how it was depicted in the book, among a series of other claims.A representative for Number 9 Films and Shadowplay Features, the production companies behind the movie version of The Salt Path, told Deadline on Monday: “There were no known claims against the book at the time of optioning it or producing and distributing the film.”Insisting they were only made aware of the allegations when contacted by The Observer last week, they said the film is a “faithful adaptation of the book that we optioned” and that the team “undertook all necessary due diligence before acquiring the book”.“The allegations made in The Observer relate to the book and are a matter for the author Raynor Winn. We have passed any correspondence relating to the article to Raynor and her agent,” they concluded.Sex Education and The X-Files star Gillian Anderson played Raynor Winn in The Salt PathAfter premiering at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2024, The Salt Path was finally released in cinemas at the end of May and, according to Deadline, has already grossed more than £7.34 million at the UK box office alone.Raynor Winn’s lawyers previously provided a statement to The Observer, which said: “The Salt Path lays bare the physical and spiritual journey Moth [Winn’s husband] and I shared, an experience that transformed us completely and altered the course of our lives. This is the true story of our journey.”The Telegraph later published a lengthier version of this statement, which continued: “[The] Observer article is highly misleading. We are taking legal advice and won’t be making any further comment at this time.”READ MORE:Confused About The Salt Path Controversy? Here's The Story So Far
