'They Have This New Word': Trump Makes A Startlingly Weird Claim About Vocabulary
President Donald Trump on Wednesday tried to explain the Republican Party’s steep election losses this week in part on a failure of language ― specifically, a failure to use a “new word.” Many blamed his party’s defeat on a mix of Trump’s own unpopularity ― his approval rating just reached a new low ― and consumer frustration at continued inflation. But the president insisted everything is moving in the right direction. The only issue, he said, is that Republicans don’t talk about it enough. “They have this new word called ‘affordability,’” Trump explained during a Fox News interview. “And they don’t talk about it enough.” Trump: We've done so much, energy is way down. Look at energy. We'll have $2 gas. That brings everything else down. Groceries are way down other than beef. They have this new word called affordability and they don't talk about it enough. The Democrats make it up because we took… pic.twitter.com/ZkZCpSMV98— Acyn (@Acyn) November 5, 2025The word “affordability” isn’t new; the Oxford English Dictionary traces it to 1910, making it more than a century old, with its use increasing sharply starting in the 1950s-60s.If the word is used more frequently lately, it’s likely because affordability has been an ongoing issue due to the inflation that began after the COVID-19 pandemic, and continues despite Trump’s campaign promise to “immediately bring prices down, starting on day one.” Trump, however, insisted prices are dropping. “Groceries are way down, other than beef,” he said during his Fox News interview. While the inflation rate has slowed from post-COVID highs, it’s still rising. One new poll finds that seven in 10 Americans report paying more for groceries this year than they did a year ago. “Energy is way down, look at energy, we’re gonna have $2 gasoline,” Trump said. “I did that.” Trump has repeatedly claimed $2 gas, but average prices have never reached that point during his second term (and only did so during his first term, due to the COVID-19 pandemic). The current national average is a hair over $3 a gallon, about a dime cheaper than it was a year ago, according to AAA. He also bragged about the stock market. “The country’s doing very well, but as Republicans you have to talk about it,” he said. “It’s no good if we do a great job and you don’t talk about it, and I don’t think they talk about it enough.” See more of his Fox News interview below:
