Trump Just ‘Trolling Democrats’ With Talk Of Third Term, Top Republican Claims

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump understands he can’t serve another term as president and is only joking when he talks about running in 2028, according to House Speaker Mike Johnson (Republican, Louisana). “It’s been a great run, but I think the president knows – and he and I have talked about – the constrictions of the Constitution,” Johnson told reporters Tuesday. The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, ratified in 1951 after Franklin D. Roosevelt had been elected to four terms, forbids presidents from serving more than two. Trump has repeatedly talked about serving another term and likes to show off “Trump 2028” hats. He most recently discussed the prospect on Monday. “I would love to do it. I have my best numbers ever,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One. “Am I not ruling it out? I mean, you’ll have to tell me.”It’s all just a joke, according to Johnson. “The Trump 2028 cap is one of the most popular that’s ever been produced, and he has a good time with that, trolling the Democrats, whose hair is on fire about the very prospect,” Johnson said. The speaker has previously misjudged the president’s intentions quite badly. In January of this year, shortly before Trump took the oath of office for the second time, Johnson said he did not expect Trump to pardon violent rioters who assaulted police on Jan. 6, 2021. “I think what the president said and Vice President-elect JD Vance has said is that peaceful protesters should be pardoned, but violent criminals should not,” Johnson said on Meet the Press two days before Trump granted clemency to all of his 1,500-plus supporters who stormed the Capitol grounds that day. Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon said last week that Trump would serve another term. “He’s going to get a third term.
