Winona Ryder 'Fought Hard' Over This 1 Aspect Of Her Stranger Things Character

Winona Ryder at the 2020 SAG AwardsWinona Ryder has claimed she “had to fight really hard” in order to make her character in Stranger Things as well-rounded as she wound up becoming.The Oscar nominee has played Joyce Byers in all four seasons of the hit Netflix sci-fi series, and will reprise the role in the much-hyped final batch of episodes, which will premiere later this year.During a recent wide-ranging interview with Elle UK, Winona opened up about how when she first read the script, she spoke with Stranger Things’ producers about fleshing out her character.“I had to fight really hard to make Joyce real and flawed,” she claimed, with creators the Duffer Brothers conceding that they originally conceived Joyce to simply serve as “the mom” in the story, before Winona was cast.When the show first began streaming almost a decade ago, Winona told Netflix’s Tudum outlet: “Joyce is a single parent… I know a lot of women like that, who are really good people, but they struggle.”Last year, Winona told Esquire: “I really fought for Joyce’s flaws. I didn’t want [her] to be like supermom. I wanted her to be one of these women I saw [in the movies of the 1970s and 1980s], that was just doing the best they can.
