6 Signs Of A Hole In Your Heart Adults Might Dismiss
Heart health equipmentAfter an “investigation” at the Royal Brompton Hospital last year, Emma Willis was diagnosed with a hole in her heart (also known as an atrial septal defect, or ASD for short). “Turns out, I’ve been pottering around for 48 years blissfully unaware I had a hole in my heart,” she wrote on Instagram. “Isn’t it bonkers what’s happening in our bodies that we have no idea about?” The British Heart Foundation (BHF) says that at birth, ASD often has no symptoms. But if it doesn’t close, “symptoms may begin in adulthood,” the Mayo Clinic added. Here’s what an ASD is, how it affects your health, and some signs you might have one.View this post on InstagramA post shared by Emma Willis (@emmawillisofficial)What is an atrial septal defect (ASD)?An ASD is a hole in the wall between the two top chambers (atria) of your heart. There are three types of ASD. The most common is a secundum ASD, which is in the middle of the wall between the atria. Then, there’s primium ASD, also known as ostium primum defect or partial atrioventricular septal defect. That’s still in the same atrial wall, but lower down towards the bottom chambers of the heart (ventricles). Lastly, there’s sinus venosus ASD. This is (again) in the same wall, but it’s closer to major blood vessels, which bring less oxygenated blood back to the heart. It can happen either at the top or the bottom of the atrial wall. ASDs are congenital, meaning people with a hole in their heart were born that way.It happens when the baby’s heart develops in the womb. How does a hole in your heart affect your health? It depends. Sometimes, a small hole in your heart will close when you’re a very young child.Other times, they won’t cause any clear concerns. But bigger holes can sometimes lead to increased pressure in the lungs, leaky heart valves, and even stroke if untreated, the BHF adds. The Mayo Clinic says that over time, those with added pressure on the lungs (pulmonary hypertension) can develop Eisenmenger syndrome, a type of permanent lung damage. What are the symptoms of a hole in your heart in adults? These can include: Shortness of breathNot being able to exercise for longFeeling tiredIrregular or extra heartbeatsFaintingRecurring lung infections.See a doctor if you face any of these, the BHF advised.Related...This Lifestyle Change May Delay Dementia And Heart Disease As You AgeBoost Heart Health After Menopause With This 5-Second Daily TrickThis Dental Hygiene Step Has Been Linked To Better Heart Health, But 69% Of Us Skip It
