Christine Baranski Brands Katy Perry Space Flight A 'Grotesque Display Of Wealth'
Christine BaranskiChristine Baranski was apparently left uninspired by the all-female space mission that took Katy Perry and other prolific women to space this spring. The Gilded Age actor was speaking on a panel event for the HBO historical drama at ATX TV Festival in Austin, Texas, when she got into a discussion about the depiction of wealth on screen.Following this, the conversation soon turned to the controversial Blue Origin flight, led by Jeff Bezos, that took six public figures to the edge of space for an 11-minute mission in April.Along with the California Gurls singer, the crew was made up of news anchor Gayle King, philanthropist (and the Amazon founder’s then-fiancée) Lauren Sánchez Bezos, rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen and film producer Kerianne Flynn.Katy Perry after returning to Earth in April 2025The flight was intended by its crew to be a feminist triumph while also showcasing the company’s space tourism programme and cutting-edge technology, but it was widely criticised as an empty and distasteful stunt.Speaking on the panel, Christine said she would like to see The Gilded Age continue (per People) because there “is such an exploration to be done in terms of the corruption that goes on, the buying of government influence, which is happening now”.The Mamma Mia! actor went on: “And the grotesque displays of wealth? Sending women into a spaceship? For what? So they can do their makeup? What the fuck?”“Don’t get me started,” she added in the voice of her character Agnes van Rhijn. “I’m going to sound like Agnes.”christine baranski is my president pic.twitter.com/QGAIra3nVS— nat 🍉 | 𝕮𝖍𝖗𝖎𝖘𝖙𝖎𝖓𝖊 𝕭'𝖘 croissant 🌻🥐 (@dianessunflower) August 12, 2025Christine is far from the only public figure to speak out on the much-memed space flight. Emily Ratajkowskisaid she was “disgusted” at the mission, adding that it was “beyond parody.”Actor and director Olivia Wilde also shared a picture of Katy kissing the ground upon returning from space, joking: “Billion dollars bought some good memes I guess.” Lily Allen also called the stunt “out of touch” on her Miss Me? podcast, before walking back her comments and saying she spoke from a place of “internalised misogyny”.During her time in space, Katy sang a quiet rendition of Louis Armstrong’s What A Wonderful World and revealed the setlist for her upcoming tour. The Grammy nominee broke her silence a few weeks after the space flight with a social media comment that also seemed to address backlash to her recent album and tour.“When the ‘online’ world tries to make me a human Piñata, I take it with grace and send them love, cause I know so many people are hurting in so many ways and the internet is very much so a dumping ground for unhinged and unhealed,” she wrote on a post by fan page.Gayle King also hit back at some of the criticisms levelled against herself and her team, claiming that people minimising the achievement had been “disrespectful”.READ MORE:Mariah Carey Only Just Found Out Katy Perry Went To Space – And Her Response Is Out Of This WorldOrlando Bloom Laughs Off Media Furore Around Ex Katy Perry And Justin TrudeauKaty Perry Opens Up About Feeling Like A 'Human Piñata' Because Of Online Hate
