Putin May Have Just Sent A Signal He Is Only Paying Lip Service To Trump Peace Talks
There's widespread scepticism that Putin is really willing to negotiate a peace deal with Trump on Friday. Vladimir Putin seems to be preparing to test a Russian nuclear-armed cruise missiles, according to reports, even as he prepares for peace talks with Donald Trump on Friday. The American president and his Russian counterpart are set to meet in Alaska tomorrow for a highly anticipated face-to-face looking at what it would take for Putin to end his brutal war in Ukraine. However, specialists told Reuters news agency Putin is still working on his deadliest weapons – suggesting he is not at all ready for peace.Jeffery Lewis from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies and Decker Eveleth of the CNA research and analysis organisation separately examined satellite photos of a Russian archipelago, Novaya Zemlya.Lewis said: “We can see all of the activity at the test site, which is both huge amounts of supplies coming in to support operations and movement at the place where they actually launch the missile.”Western sources also told Reuters they believe Russia is preparing to test a nuclear-armed, nuclear-powered missile known as a Burevestnik.Putin has previously described it as an “invincible” weapon with “a practically unlimited range”.Lewis warned that a test could happen as early as this week, though such an event would have been planned far in advance – most likely before Trump announced the hastily-arranged meeting with Putin.Still, Moscow could have cancelled such a test as a gesture of goodwill ahead of the talks.Russia has not exactly slowed down its attacks on Ukraine in recent weeks, either. In July, it launched 6,200 one-war attack uncrewed aerial systems, or drones, against Ukraine, which the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) described as a “new monthly highly”.Russian long range aviation bombers have also “maintained their operational tempo”, launching more than 70 of their premier munitions towards Ukraine in July alone.Ukraine is still trying to hold its own, and continues to send its own drones deep into Russian territory to disrupt the military industry and fuel protection. But, the MoD noted: “It is likely that Russia will respond to Ukrainian successes both in kind and with its more destructive [long range aviation] fleet, with the Kremlin frustrated by Ukraine’s ability to penetrate its extensive defensive posture.”The British intelligence officials also reported that Putin is still pushing forward on the frontline and now controls approximately 20% of his European neighbour’s territory.Trump said on Monday that he was “going to try to get some of that territory back for Ukraine”, but warned there may have to be “some swapping, changes in land” – an idea Kyiv and its European allies have rejected outright. The US president then tried to dampen expectations for the talks in a video call with Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders last night, saying he only wanted to “set the table” for a follow-up discussion. He also promised there would be “severe consequences” if Putin failed to agree to a peace deal. But, judging from the Russian leader’s ongoing aggression, it does not seem like Putin is planning on changing course any time soon.Related...Downing Street Warns Trump Not To Force Ukraine To Give Up Land To End Its War With RussiaTrump Eases Up On Vladimir Putin By Offering The Russian Dictator 1 Major ConcessionTrump Has A New Tactic To Stop The Ukraine War – Going After Russia's Allies
