John Bolton Rips Trump In First Op-Ed Since FBI Raid
Former national security adviser John Bolton lashed out at President Donald Trump in his first comments following the shocking FBI raid of his home and office on Friday.Bolton, a former Trump administration official who is now a frequent critic of the president, referenced the raid on his home in Bethesda, Maryland, and office in Washington, D.C., in an op-ed criticising Trump’s chaotic handling of the Russia-Ukraine war.“Donald Trump’s Ukraine policy today is no more coherent than it was last Friday when his administration executed search warrants against my home and office,” Bolton wrote in the Washington Examiner.“Collapsing in confusion and haste, Trump’s negotiations may be in their last throes, along with his Nobel Peace Prize campaign.” Alluding to Trump rolling out the red carpet in Alaska for Russian President Vladimir Putin, Bolton went on to characterise the “furious pace” at which Trump has recently moved to secure a peace deal as “one of several significant mistakes.” In another jab at the president, Bolton said the Trump administration “has tried to camouflage its disarray behind social media posts” and referenced Trump comparing his summit to then-Vice President Richard Nixon’s pointed discussions with Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev in the 1950s.“Why Trump wants to be compared to the only president who resigned in disgrace is unclear,” Bolton wrote. He finished by suggesting the president’s “efforts over the last two-plus weeks may have left us further from peace and a just settlement for Ukraine than before.”Bolton, who served as Trump’s national security adviser for 17 months, became a target of the president following the release of his 2020 memoir.Trump previously called for Bolton to go to jail over the book and revoked his Secret Service protection in January.FBI agents carry empty boxes to former national security adviser John Bolton's house in Bethesda, Maryland. The Department of Justice launched an investigation into Bolton in 2020, looking into whether his book contained classified national security information. The DOJ ended that probe under President Joe Biden the following year. The investigation involving the book has since resumed, a source told CNN.Following the raid, Trump described Bolton as “not a smart guy” who could be “very unpatriotic.”But he suggested that he knew nothing about the raid, adding that while he’s “the chief law enforcement officer,” it’d be “better” for the DOJ to handle the details.
