Kids Keep Saying 'Chat' And It's (Probably) Not What You Think It Means
“The students are officially calling each other ‘chat’,” an astonished teacher revealed on Reddit.“I had an entire classroom today not using anyone’s names when talking to each other ... They were just screaming and calling and saying ‘chat’ over and over. Anyone else having this? It’s unreal.”While the post was shared a year ago, ‘chat’ is still very much a part of the lingo Generation Alpha is using on a daily basis. But what does ‘chat’ mean when kids say it?We’ve already covered off glazing and gurt,tuff and six-seven, as well as the meaning when teens call something “Ohio” (which isn’t necessarily positive). So, WTF is chat all about? While plenty of us might use chat to describe an informal conversation (ie.“can we just have a quick chat?”) or even to announce the presence of something or someone in wider conversation (ie. “X has entered the chat”), the younger generations are using it in a completely different way. According to Gabb’s guide to teen slang, chat is quite simply used “to refer to a group of people, like friends or people in their class”.It can also be used to describe a person, as Slate explains: “It’s both singular and plural. It’s both second and third person. Everybody, regardless of the size of the intended audience, is chat.”So, you might overhear them saying: “I don’t know, chat”, “Chat, is this real?” (often used to discuss whether something’s AI-generated or not), or “Chat, come here”.TikTok creator and teacher Philip Lindsay, who is known for his explainers on what kids are saying (because lord knows we need it), shared in a video that “chat originates from the world that these kids are growing up in: Snapchats, group chats and, most importantly, live-streaming chats”.He added: “Live-streaming is huge with this generation and the chat is the group of people who are watching the live stream: sending gifts, commenting, liking, sharing. That is the chat.“The chat is the live-streamer’s crew, their fam, their people. That’s exactly what this word means as the kids have taken it from the online world and brought it into real life.”Well now you know, chat. Related...WTF Does 'Crashing Out' Mean When Teens Say It?Kids Keep Saying 'Six-Seven' And Nobody Seems To Know What It MeansWTF Is Ballerina Cappuccina – And Why Does My Kid Keep Saying It?
