(AP Photo/Kin Cheung)Nigel Farage has been accused of planning to take the UK “back to austerity” as he plans to perform a major policy U-turn.The Reform leader will officially ditch his party’s previous pledge to slash taxes while increasing public spending, made before last year’s general election.Instead, Farage will vow to “get public spending under control” in an attempt to boost the economy.Reform’s election manifesto included plans to boost public spending by £141 billion a year while at the same time cutting taxes by £70 billion. But in a speech in the City of London on Monday, Farage will perform a complete 180 degree shift in his position by insisting government spending must come down before taxes can be cut.He will say: “Reform will get public spending under control, so that the nation’s borrowing costs come down. Then, and only then, will I cut taxes to stimulate growth. We must get the economy growing.”Farage will add: “We are the pro-business party. We will reduce the size of the bloated state. We will bring expertise into government. We will reduce regulation and the power of the regulators, we will make Britain a competitive, good place to invest, to work and to live.“But I know we can only cut taxes once the deficit is under control.”A Labour Party spokesperson said: “Nigel Farage says he is offering something new - but for all his talk, his plan would take us back to austerity.“We’ve seen from the councils Reform run that they’ve failed to deliver the savings they already promised and are cutting services and raising taxes as a result.“They’ve said themselves that those councils are a shop window for what a Reform government would do nationally - we know that this is more empty promises and no real plan.“This Labour government chooses national renewal after years of Tory austerity and decline, and the roots of a fairer economy are starting to take hold.”Shadow chancellor Mel Stride said: “It’s impossible to take Reform seriously on the economy when their promises disintegrate after five minutes.“They are a one-man band and have resorted to junking promises they made only recently in a desperate attempt to appear economically credible. “In local government they have failed to find savings and are instead planning tax hikes on hard-working families. Their left-wing, tax-raising, debt-increasing proposals for the national economy would leave families paying the price.”  Related...'Putin's Pet!'
