The Safety Reason You Should Always Flip Your Luggage Tag

The Safety Reason You Should Always Flip Your Luggage Tag
Luggage tagWhen it comes to packing for my holidays, I’ve historically had pretty bad form (though thankfully, the 3-3-3 rule has made it a lot less chaotic). I can never remember what the liquid rules are. I always put my laptop in the wrong place. Basically, I’m not type A enough to check off every task before I leave to the airport. But I reckon one rule suggested by Silvena Nonev, a travel expert with Scandinavia Private Tours, might stick – not least because it only takes two seconds. “Always, always, always flip your information card backwards,” she advised. Why should you flip your luggage tag backwards? The point of luggage tags is to share information like your address and phone number that can identify you if your baggage is lost. This is usually stuff you might be quite sensitive about. For instance, you may well hunch over your phone screen on a flight to stop your seat neighbour from seeing your details. But what’s the point if they’re displayed on the carousel later anyway, Nonev suggests?“I see countless travellers every single day with their names, phone numbers, and even home addresses on full display,” she shared.“To me, that’s like inviting strangers into your private life.”After all, she suggested, “If someone knows your name, number, and address, they already have enough to attempt identity fraud or, at the very least, harass you.” Plus, the environment your luggage is seen in suggests that your home is empty. So, simply ensuring your tag is facing away from sight is usually a better-safe-than-sorry idea.“The tag doesn’t stop working if it’s turned backwards,” Silvena pointed out. “Security and airline staff can still open or flip it when required. You’re just making sure that the average passer-by or fellow passenger doesn’t get a free peek into your life.” That’s not the only safety tip the travel expert has Silvena says that holiday oversharing doesn’t begin and end with your luggage tag. “Parents travelling with children often put everything on display without realising the implications,” Silvena shared – not only through their labels, but also by posting their holiday in real time on public social media accounts. “When travelling, I always advise people to minimise what they share,” she said.“Whether it’s on social media or on a luggage tag, the less strangers know about you, the safer you’ll be. Flip the tag backwards, and you’ve instantly cut out a big source of risk.” Related...UK Travellers Must Avoid This Airport Liquid Mistake, Warns Transport Secretary9 Myths About Flight Attendants That Are 'Just Plain Insulting'The 1 Potentially Deadly Mistake People Make During An Emergency Landing, According To Flight Attendants
