10 November 2026 in Turkey: Why the Country Stops at 09:05 to Remember Atatürk
Whether 10 November is a holiday in Turkey (it is not), what happens at 09:05, the ceremonies at Anıtkabir and Dolmabahçe, what schools do and when the November 2026 common exams are, the history behind the date, and how Turks abroad and in Germany observe it.
10 November is the day Turkey remembers Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder and first president of the Republic, who died at Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul at 09:05 on 10 November 1938. It is not a public holiday: the Law on National Holidays and General Holidays (No. 2429) does not list it, and schools, universities, public offices, banks and shops work normally. Instead, at 09:05 sirens sound across the country, traffic and work stop for a silent tribute, flags drop to half-mast, and the state holds its main ceremony at Anıtkabir, Atatürk's mausoleum in Ankara. In 2026 the 88th anniversary falls on a Tuesday, an ordinary school day, one day before the Ministry of National Education's first nationwide common exams of the year.
Is 10 November a holiday, and what happens at 09:05?
At 09:05, the minute Atatürk died, sirens sound in cities across Turkey and people stop where they are. Press reports from 2024 describe drivers switching off their engines on city streets and motorways, metro passengers standing, and seasonal farm and construction workers in Istanbul, Bursa, Tokat, Antalya and Hatay pausing. Flags are raised to full mast in the morning, lowered to half-mast at 09:05 and kept there until sunset. Official ceremonies observe a silence of about two minutes, signalled by siren, command or bugle, followed by the national anthem, the İstiklal Marşı; some press reports describe the nationwide stop as lasting a minute. The only official holiday in this part of the calendar is Republic Day on 29 October; on 10 November itself, expect a pause at 09:05 rather than closures.
The ceremonies at Anıtkabir and Dolmabahçe Palace
In Ankara the format is stable from year to year. In 2025, the 87th anniversary, the state delegation began walking up Anıtkabir's Lion Road (Aslanlı Yol) at 08:45, led by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, with Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş, cabinet members, opposition leaders Özgür Özel (CHP), Devlet Bahçeli (MHP) and Müsavat Dervişoğlu (İYİ Party), the heads of the high courts and the military command. Erdoğan laid a wreath of red and white carnations; at 09:05 the delegation stood in silence, the flag was lowered and the anthem was sung, and the president then signed the Anıtkabir Special Book. In Istanbul the focus is room 71 in the Harem section of Dolmabahçe Palace, where Atatürk died: in 2025 the palace opened at 07:30, long queues formed, and after the Presidency's wreath the Governorship, the armed forces, the metropolitan municipality and civic groups laid flowers on the bed. The city's official ceremony is at the Republic Monument in Taksim, and every province holds its own at the local Atatürk monument. At Anıtkabir the public is admitted once the state ceremony ends, and both sites draw crowds through the morning.
What happens in schools? Is there an exam on 10 November?
Schools are open and hold commemorations on the day, and 10–16 November is marked as Atatürk Week in the Ministry of National Education (MEB) calendar of special days. Under the 2026–2027 school calendar signed by Education Minister Yusuf Tekin, the first-term mid-term break runs from 16 to 20 November 2026, so in 2026 10 November is a regular teaching day. There is no common exam on 10 November itself: MEB's first round of nationwide common written exams (ortak yazılı sınav) is set for 11–12 November 2026, covering grade 6 mathematics, grade 7 Turkish, grade 9 mathematics and grade 10 Turkish language and literature, according to reports of the ministry's calendar published on 11 September 2026. The calendar has drawn attention before. In 2025 the mid-term break ran from 10 to 14 November, so the anniversary fell during the holiday. When critics claimed in July 2025 that the date had been placed in the break on purpose, MEB replied that breaks had followed the ninth school week for three years, that 3–7 November 2025 was a common-exam week, and that schools would hold commemorations on 10 November with pupils, teachers and parents, as it had done in 2024, when the day fell on a Sunday.
Why 10 November? Atatürk's death and the road to Anıtkabir
According to MEB's own biography, Atatürk's first symptoms appeared in 1937 and doctors in Istanbul diagnosed cirrhosis in 1938. After weeks aboard the yacht Savarona he was moved to Dolmabahçe Palace, and on 5 September 1938 he wrote his will. He could not attend the Republic's 15th anniversary on 29 October; his message to the army was read by Prime Minister Celâl Bayar. He died at Dolmabahçe at 09:05 on 10 November 1938. From 16 November his coffin lay in state in the palace's great hall for three days; after funeral prayers on 19 November it went by sea on the battleship Yavuz to İzmit, then by special train to Ankara. After a state funeral on 21 November 1938 he was placed in a temporary tomb at the Ethnography Museum in Ankara. A design competition for a mausoleum on Rasattepe in Ankara opened on 1 March 1941 and drew 49 entries from Turkey, Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, France and Czechoslovakia; on 7 May 1942 the government chose the design by Emin Onat and Orhan Arda. Construction began on 9 October 1944 and was finished in 1953. On 10 November 1953, the 15th anniversary of his death, Atatürk's body was moved from the Ethnography Museum to Anıtkabir and laid in a tomb prepared with soil brought from every province. Since then the anniversary ceremony has been held there.
How Turks abroad, including in Germany, observe the day
10 November is an ordinary working and school day in Germany, so diaspora commemorations are organised by Turkish embassies, consulates and associations. On 10 November 2025 Turkish missions from Thessaloniki and Athens to London, Brussels, Vienna, Bern, Moscow, Beijing and Baku held ceremonies, many with a silence at 09:05 local time and the national anthem. At the Consulate General in Berlin, Consul General İlker Okan Şanlı spoke and the programme included Atatürk's favourite songs, a documentary on his last years and a zeybek dance by pupils. Missions announce their own times; for consular appointments on the day, check the mission's website.
