BBC Journalist Reveals 40 Winks Almost Sunk His Donald Trump Scoop
The BBC’s chief North America correspondent, Gary O’Donoghue, finally landed his long-sought interview with Donald Trump. But it didn’t begin smoothly.O’Donoghue was napping on Monday evening when the call from the White House came. And he ended up accidentally hanging up on the president, he revealed in an article published on Tuesday.O’Donoghue, who is blind, had spent weeks chasing the president’s people for a conversation timed around the first anniversary of the assassination attempt on his life at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, he said. After a possible weekend call with Trump fell through and following weeks on the road without a day off, O’Donoghue admitted he’d “given up on the interview happening.”“I was exhausted and taking a nap. Then the phone rang,” he recalled.“I blearily answered,” he continued, “and the voice of Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt came over the speaker: ‘Hi Gary, I’m here with the president, here you go.’”O’Donoghue recalled dashing “into my living room, scrambling for my digital recorder; the line dropped and I thought I’d lost it.”He wrote, “But they came back on the line,” and he ended up speaking with Trump for 20 minutes about the assassination attempt, his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin and more.
