Lewis Capaldi Calls Out 'Not Fair' Double Standard For Women In Pop Music
Lewis Capaldi on stage at Glastonbury in 2023Lewis Capaldi has conceded that in many ways, he has it easy as a male pop star compared to some of his female peers. The Scottish chart-topper recently made an appearance on Roberto Mtz’s interview series Creativo, where he discussed how exciting the world of pop feels thanks to artists like Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan and Olivia Rodrigo. When the host asked if Lewis believes female artists are dominating the music scene right now because they’re better when it comes to “the performance aspect” of being a pop star, he responded: “You always see people saying that women put [more effort in]. And I get it. It’s true.“I can’t speak for anyone, but women seem to get up there and really put everything into a performance, and it’s all really thought out. And a lot of guys get up there – myself included – and just sing, and show up in a t-shirt and jeans. That is a very valid criticism, I think, that gets levelled towards male pop stars.”Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter and Olivia Rodrigo were all praised by Lewis Capaldi during a recent interviewPointing out some male performers like Harry Styles, Benson Boone and Conan Gray are potential exceptions to this rule, he said: “It’s funny, not to sound like I’m pandering or anything, but it’s weird that sometimes there’s more expected of [women], in the pop sphere or whatever.“Like, a woman wouldn’t get away with just getting up and singing a song in a t-shirt and jeans and not caring. I feel like, for some reason, it’s not fair. There’s a higher bar for female artists. I feel like they get picked apart, maybe, a bit more than male artists when it comes to stuff like that.”When the host asked Lewis if his own approach was a marker of confidence that he only needs his voice to perform, the Someone You Loved singer insisted with a laugh: “I see it as laziness on my part, for sure. I see it as complete and utter laziness.”He added: “The only thing I like in music is getting up and singing. Music videos don’t excite me at all, photo-shoots don’t excite me at all. Live performances I just like to sing the songs and stuff. Maybe it should be something that I pay more attention to and I put more effort into, but yeah. “I’m in this phase at the minute, in life, where I only want to do stuff that feels good. And music videos, at the moment, don’t feel good, or big, elaborate live performances. I always try to – especially with the arena shows we do – I want it to be a cool creative, but I guess yeah it’s something I need to be more [aware] of.”Lewis recently stepped back into the spotlight after an extended break to focus on both his mental and physical health.Back in June, he made a triumphant comeback to the Glastonbury stage, where he debuted his new song Survive, which quickly became his sixth UK number one single.READ MORE:Lewis Capaldi Claims Some Stars Lied About Checking In On Him During His Mental Health BreakLewis Capaldi Says Challenging Glastonbury 2023 Performance Was ‘Most Important Day’ Of His LifeLewis Capaldi Teasing Jamie Dornan Over Fifty Shades Is Somehow Even Filthier Than You'd Expect
