Olivia Colman And Benedict Cumberbatch's Film Called Out Over 'Dangerous' And 'Offensive' Scene
Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch in The RosesOlivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch’s new film The Roses is facing criticism over one scene which has been described as “offensive” by a leading allergy charity. As those who’ve already seen the original film or read the novel on which it is based will know, The Roses centres around a married couple who go to war with one another after they decide to divorce.Part of this sees Benedict’s character tricking his estranged wife into eating raspberries, to which she is allergic, a plot point which the Natasha Allergy Research Foundation (NARF) has branded “dangerous”.In a post on its website, the NARF revealed it had already spoken with producers over the scene in question, as well as the depiction of food allergies more generally in the film.“This is not just poor taste. It is dangerous,” they said. The Roses tells the story of a once-enamoured couple who go to war with one another as part of their divorce proceedings“Withholding life-saving medication in a medical emergency is not remotely funny. To make matters worse, the film depicts an adrenaline auto-injector (EpiPen, Jext) being administered incorrectly, repeatedly. This is factually inaccurate and risks spreading dangerous misinformation.“For people living with severe food allergies and their families this type of portrayal is not only triggering, but harmful. Food allergies are a medical condition that can, in an instant, become life-threatening.“Using them as a plot twist for laughs is careless, offensive, and reinforces harmful myths about allergic reactions and anaphylaxis.”Read the full letter here.View this post on InstagramA post shared by The Natasha Allergy Research Foundation (@natashasfoundation)HuffPost UK has contacted the publicity team for The Roses for comment. The Roses – which arrived in cinemas last week – is a modern reimagining of Warren Adler’s 1981 novel The War Of The Roses, which was itself previously adapted for the big screen in 1989, with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in the lead roles. In the new version, Ncuti Gatwa, Kate McKinnon, Andy Samberg, Jamie Demetriou and Oscar winner Allison Janney are among the stars joining Olivia and Benedict in the especially star-studded cast.Despite this one particular controversy, The Roses has received somewhat positive reviews from critics, and currently holds a critical score of 66% on the reviews aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes.MORE FILM NEWS:This Is Why The First Trailer For Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights Has Already Divided ViewersHugh Bonneville Uses Downton Abbey Premiere To Express Solidarity With PalestineOlivia Colman Gets Candid About The Young Hollywood Star Who Makes Her 'Go Weak At The Knees'
