Sophie Turner To Play Lara Croft In New Tomb Raider TV Series

Sophie TurnerSophie Turner has become the latest star confirmed to be putting her spin on Tomb Raider icon Lara Croft.A new TV series based around the legendary video game character is currently in the works at Amazon, helmed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, as part of the Fleabag creator’s (admittedly, mostly fruitless) six-year deal with the platform.On Thursday morning, it was confirmed that the show will feature Game Of Thrones fave Sophie in its lead role, with production due to get underway in January.“I am thrilled beyond measure to be playing Lara Croft,” the British star enthused. “She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got.”Lara Croft first rose to prominence in the 1990s thanks to the Tomb Raider video game series.Lara Croft as depicted in one of the more recent Tomb Raider gamesSince then, she’s also been brought to the big screen, as portrayed by Oscar winners Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander (Hayley Atwell also lent her voice to the character in the Netflix animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend Of Lara Croft).Sophie added: “They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands.“I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking.”Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft in 2001's Tomb RaiderPhoebe also said of the Emmy winner: “I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team.“It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving.
