Channel 4 Defends Use Of AI-Generated Presenter As Part Of Dispatches Stunt
A still from the latest episode of Dispatches, which aired on MondayChannel 4 has explained the reasoning behind a recent episode of Dispatches which marked a TV first in that it was fronted by an AI-generated host.On Monday evening, Channel 4 aired a Dispatches special titled Will AI Take My Job?, exploring the results of a recent investigation which looked into the rise of artificial intelligence in Britain’s workforce. At the end of the episode, the “host” explained: “AI is going to touch everybody’s lives in the next few years. And for some, it will take their jobs.“Call centre workers? Customer service agents? Maybe even TV presenters like me. Because I’m not real. In a British TV first, I’m an AI presenter. Some of you might have guessed: I don’t exist, I wasn’t on location reporting this story. My image and voice were generated using AI.”View this post on InstagramA post shared by Dispatches (@c4dispatches)As reported by Variety, Channel 4’s head of news and current affairs insisted that the “use of an AI presenter is not something” the broadcaster intends to be “making a habit of” in the future.“Instead, our focus in news and current affairs is on premium, fact-checked, duly-impartial and trusted journalism – something AI is not capable of doing,” she insisted.Perhaps pre-empting that having a whole Dispatches special fronted by an AI-generated host may spark backlash, she added: “This stunt does serve as a useful reminder of just how disruptive AI has the potential to be – and how easy it is to hoodwink audiences with content they have no way of verifying.”Channel 4 added that this stunt did not go against their own guidelines around the use of AI, as it was specifically used to make the viewer question issues “relating to trust and authenticity in the digital age”, according to Variety. The use of generative AI continues to be a divisive issue across many industries, including entertainment. In 2023, strikes across Hollywood were partly inspired by concerns surrounding movie and TV studios’ usage of artificial intelligence to scan performers’ likenesses and recreate them in future projects.READ MORE:Robin Williams' Daughter Pleads With Her Dad's Fans To Stop Using His Image In 'Gross' AI VideosScarlett Johansson Calls For More AI Regulation After Likeness Is Used In Fake Ye Campaign Video'I Greatly Object': Sir David Attenborough Speaks Out Against AI Recreations Of His Voice
