Liz Truss And Elon Musk Stoke Anti-Asylum Sentiment With Misleading Clip Of Labour Minister
Liz Truss and Elon MuskLiz Truss has jumped on Elon Musk’s latest criticisms of Labour by sharing a clip of a cabinet minister appearing to say the government values the rights of asylum seekers more than the interests of local Brits.Neither the former prime minister nor the richest man in the world shared the full interview, though, which shows Bridget Phillipson explaining the wider picture. It comes as anti-asylum protests have erupted across the country in recent weeks. The government even found itself in court last week, fighting to keep an asylum hotel in Epping open. While the Home Office won its appeal, it has raised further questions about the government’s promise to end all asylum hotels by the end of this parliament. So on Sunday, presenter Trevor Phillips questioned education secretary Phillipson over how the government won that case, in a video which soon went viral on X.He said: “Your lawyers, under your guidance, have said in terms, that the rights of the asylum seekers are more important than the rights of local people in Epping Forest.“Would you at least acknowledge that that is what they will hear? It’s up to you. Ministers can say we agree with that or we don’t agree with that. “You can’t simply say, ‘let’s balance things’. Do you agree with what your lawyers said or don’t you?”“Yes of course we do,” Phillipson began – but the clip shared by Musk and reposted by Truss cuts off there.Musk reposted the video without comment, but Truss wrote in her caption: “We know whose side they are on. And it’s not the people of Britain.”The former prime minister’s post accumulated more than seven million views on X while the platform’s CEO – Musk – accumulated over a million, with many furious anti-migration comments added beneath. However, their clip cuts off the crucial explanation Phillipson added moments later. She told Phillips: “What I would add is that while I recognise the quite obvious and legitimate concerns that people have about the use of asylum hotels, had we not acted as the home secretary did around that case, we would have ended up with lots of disruption in terms of what that would have meant around asylum hotels.“We will close them. But we will close them in an orderly way. Not just where we turf people out on the streets in significant numbers.”She also pointed out that there was widespread use of hotels to house asylum seekers under the Conservative government – including during Truss’s time in office.Even so, Phillipson said she “completely understands how frustrating and angry people will often feel about the use of asylum hotels”.She said the government has a “responsibility” to deal with asylum seekers, alluding to the legally binding treaty, the European Convention on Human Rights. The minister added that it is about a “balance of rights” – including for those who have clear evidence that they need asylum.“Our responsibilty to those who live locally is also important as well,” she said.We know whose side they are on. And it's not the people of Britain. https://t.co/NorCI2iBED— Liz Truss (@trussliz) August 31, 2025Since she was kicked out of office, Truss has drifted further right and made her support of Trump’s administration – which Musk was once part of – clear.Meanwhile, the X chief and former head of the US department DOGE has used his platform to lambast Labour before, accusing Keir Starmer last year of “two-tier” justice. He has revived his attacks on the government recently by reposting reports about the allegedly lavish conditions asylum seekers in Britain are living in with comments such as “this must stop now”.But, according to the British Red Cross, asylum seekers are not put in top hotels. They also often suffer “with poor mental and physical health for years” due to the huge backlog of claims that need to be processed, leaving them in long-term limbo.Related...Richard Tice Snaps At Trevor Phillips As Presenter Pokes Holes In Reform's Immigration PoliciesRylan Clark Responds To Backlash Over This Morning Immigration CommentsLabour Braces For A Tense Weekend As Anti-Immigration Protesters Plan To Demonstrate Outside Asylum Hotels
